Mesh Coil VS Regular Coil: Which one is Better?

Every day the world of vaping evolves, and new technologies come into play. One of these is the mesh coil, which seems to be replacing the traditional coil. But how is this new vape coil different from regular coils, and what are the advantages of this new mesh coil. Is it better than a traditional coil? Read on to find out.

What is a Vape Coil

Before talking about the difference between mesh coils and regular coils, we have to first understand what vape coils are. A vape coil is the part of the vape that heats up and evaporates the e-liquid. It is usually a wire that has been twisted into rings to resemble a coil. Inside the coil, you can find the wick, or cotton, that absorbs the vape juice. As the electric current passes through the coil, the coils’ rings resist the electricity, generating heat and turning the coil bright red, which in turn evaporates the vape juice inside the wick. Now that you know what a coil is and how it works, let’s move on to what a mesh coil is.

What is a Mesh Coil?

Unlike traditional vape coils made out of wire, mesh coils are made out of a grid-like metal sheet with holes that look like mesh. Many people consider the mesh coil to be the coil's latest evolution, even though mesh has previously been used in vaping. It was not used as a coil but as a wicking material replaced by cotton. They are usually made from stainless steel or kanthal since they have already been used in traditional coils.

What are the Similarities and Differences between Mesh and Regular Coils?

What are the Similarities and Differences between Mesh and Regular Coils?

While mesh coils and regular coils look entirely different, they do precisely what the vape coils are supposed to do. They heat up and evaporate the vape juice stored in the wicking material when the firing button presses. That's where their similarity ends.

When it comes to the differences between regular coils and mesh coils, the most important thing is that the mesh coils are shaped almost like a bridge and cover more surface area than traditional coils. This is important because the more surface area covered, the more vapor you will produce, and with more vapor comes many more advantages and perks.

Advantages of a Mesh Coil

Mesh coils have many advantages over traditional coils. These are the advantages:

  • Faster Firing Rate
  • Long-Lasting Coils
  • More Consistent Flavor
  • Better Flavor
  • More Vapor
  • It Uses Less Power

Faster Firing Rates

The ramp up time, or the time it takes for the coil to heat up, is significantly higher on mesh coils than traditional coils, which could take up to a few seconds.

Longer Lasting Coil

As we explained earlier, one of the perks of having a large surface area like the one that mesh coils have is that the heat expands all across the surface instead of being concentrated in a single area, like the rings of traditional coils. Because of this, many people will discover that their mesh coils last longer than their standard coils, and they both time and money by having coils that last longer and don’t need to be installed or bought.

More Consistent Flavor

Something that all vapers face is that it’s hard to find flavor and vapor production consistency. As the vape juice evaporates, the hits become less potent, giving way to less flavorful hits or even dry or burnt hits. This is attributed to the spring design of traditional coils, which can only evaporate the part of the wick that comes in contact with the coil rings, leaving the ends of the wick and other elements full of vape juice.

However, a mesh coil covers a large surface area, with some designs covering the wick completely, which allows for more even hits that give more consistency in flavor and vapor production.

Better Flavor

Because everyone has their dislikes and likes when it comes to flavor, this “perk” tends to be subjective. We know that, again, because there is more surface area in mesh coils, more vapor is delivered, and therefore more flavor is experienced in every hit. While some believers think the best coil for flavor is mesh coils, we’ll let you decide this one on your own.

More Vapor

Mesh coils create more vapor than traditional coils. And this is not only because it has a more extensive surface area; it’s because the faster ramp-up time for mesh coils combined with the even hits that the larger surface area creates equals large plumes of clouds, which many people crave.

It Uses Less Power

All coils have wattage ranges displayed or engraved on the sides. A definite advantage is that to reach higher temperatures, and less power is needed when using mesh coils. This equals more battery life and less strain on your device.

Disadvantages of Mesh Coils

While there are plenty of advantages to using mesh coils, there are also disadvantages. One clear disadvantage is that you’ll use more vape juice than usual, which could become expensive if you constantly vape, and continuously, thanks to the mesh coils evaporating more vape juice, end up buying more vape juice.

Another disadvantage of mesh coils is that they don’t produce warm vapor since they heat up using less power. This again is subjective since some vapers prefer a more astonishing inhalation experience. Still, for those that prefer warmer vapor, this could be a reason why they stick to traditional coils instead of switching to mesh coils.

Conclusion

While it might seem with all the advantages that mesh coils have over regular coils that they are the best coils, we think traditional coils have their place, especially for those who want to save more money on vape juice that prefers a warmer vapor that replicates smoking. Also, keep in mind that some advantages we mentioned, like better flavor, are mostly subjective, so the best thing we can recommend is that you try both coils out and see which one you like best.
